Equinix tops Cloudscene data centre tally

Equinix has proven itself as a global data centre leader, taking the top spot across all four Cloudscene quarterly leaderboards for North America, EMEA, Oceania and Asia.

Global Switch also performed strongly, securing a top five spot in three of the regions.

In addition, CoreSite, Global Switch, CenturyLink and Digital Realty ranked in the top five service providers with the most private and direct connections across all of their colocation facilities.

Cloudscenes data additionally revealed Equinix’s SG1 to be the top data centre in Asia, Megaport to be the top network fabric in Asia and Singapore to be the top data centre ecosystem in Asia.

Cloudscene - a global directory of colocation data centres, cloud service providers and network fabrics - launched a leaderboard ranking system due to increasing demand for transparency and independent data comparing major colocation service providers worldwide.

“We live in a fast-paced world where there is an expectation that information will be at your fingertips 24/7 and until Cloudscene, this wasn’t the case when it came to finding a colocation data centre,” Cloudscene founder and serial entrepreneur, Bevan Slattery, said.

“Now, we’re responding to market demands for neutral and independent data that helps with weighing up data centre operators across important colocation regions,” he added.

The top data centre operators are selected from a pool of more than 4,900 service providers listed on Cloudscene. A combined score using density (number of facilities) and connectivity (number of PoPs) is used to determine the ranking.

In March last year, Australian payments and security solutions provider, EP2, deployed its infrastructure inside Equinix Sydney datacentres.

The new partnership enables EP2 to offer PCI–as-a-service, leveraging the Equinix Cloud Exchange.

At the time, EP2 CEO, Paul Bird, said access to Cloud Exchange enables EP2 to position itself for future growth, innovation and enhanced payments capabilities domestically and globally.

Bird said it also reduces the complexity and increases security for companies that manage digital payments.

In August last year, Equinix also signed on Yarra City Council as a new customer on the back of spending $US28 million on expanding its ME1 data centre facility in Melbourne.

The expansion featured 750 new cabinets and an additional 17,990 square feet of colocation space. In total, ME1 has about 1125 cabinets and a colocation area that covers 35,790 square feet.

At the time, Equinix Australia managing director, Jeremy Deutsch, said the development and expansion of ME1 addresses the growing demand from businesses planning to expand in Melbourne.
