NEC has appointed Mitsuhiro Murooka to lead Australia and New Zealand as the company attempts to realign operations with its Japanese head office.

Murooka has been with the IT services provider for 17 years, working in markets including Greater China and North America, the latter of which he acted as vice president for six years.

He subsequently was named general manager of the Americas Division and later oversaw the global corporate sales division based at the Tokyo headquarters.

In addition, he took on the responsibility for government and international organisation relations and business as vice president, the company said in a statement.

“I am confident that his open-minded leadership and decades of experience in various ICT fields will further enrich and strengthen the company’s forward direction,” said Kiko Kumagai, senior executive vice president at NEC. "We welcome Mitsuhiro to his new role as Managing Director and a member of the A/NZ team."

Murooka’s appointment follows the departure of Mike Barber, who vacated the role of Australia MD in March.

Barber had been with the company since 2011 when he joined as a general manager for services, holding many leadership roles including joining the board as an executive director in January 2014.

In April 2016, he stepped in as chief executive later becoming managing director in 2018.
