Swift Media has won a deal valued at up to $1.5 million to install Wi-Fi access points for global mining giant Rio Tinto.

The publicly listed telecommunications and entertainment solutions provider will also configure, monitor and manage the equipment at Rio’s workforce accommodation villages for the Brockman mines in Western Australia.

According to a shareholder update, the Wi-Fi will be used to provide the workforce’s entertainment systems and come as part of a long-running standardisation improvement program

“Swift has been requested to complete the project before the end of this calendar year,” according to a notice on the Australian Securities Exchange.

"We are pleased to announce this new engagement with Rio.  We have worked closely with Rio for over 11 years and look forward to strengthening the partnership going forward,” Swift CEO Pippa  Leary said.

“This agreement is central to our core strategy of leveraging our market-leading position to drive growth in our key Mining and Resources vertical."

Formerly known as Swift Networks, the company is no stranger to big mining customers, winning a contract to roll out wireless network infrastructure for Australian gold miner St Barbara in 2018.

That same year, it also won  $1.5 million deal through its partnership with DXC Technology to provide entertainment and crew welfare solutions to personnel sites of the oil and gas industry.

The two signed the reseller agreement with DXC's Connect business in October 2017 in a move described as giving the Sydney-headquartered provider global scale.

Swift previously cited reseller relationships spanning Telstra, AST and Tripleplay.
