The latest and greatest Nexus - and it's from LG Despite a raging East Coast hurricane, Google announced the new LG Nexus 4 Monday, among several other new products. Here's a first look at the latest entry in the company's Nexus line.
-
Up-front The 4.7-inch, 1280x768-resolution screen is fairly standard for an Android flagship -- on paper -- though it does use IPS technology, providing a potential selling point.
-
Internals The Nexus 4 features some pretty muscular hardware, including a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, Adreno 320 graphics processor and 2GB RAM. Models with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage will be available.
-
Dimensions The first LG Nexus is roughly the same size as other Android flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X+, though it's also slightly heavier. It's also considerably larger than the iPhone 5.
-
Android 4.2 While it's not the brand-new Key Lime Pie version of Android that some predicted, Android 4.2 does bring some new upgrades, including "photo sphere" (a panoramic capture mode), built-in gesture typing a la Swype, and several other impressive features.
-
Wireless charging Although there's a micro-USB connector on the Nexus 4, it's not used for charging -- rather, the phone is simply placed on a compatible mat and the battery is recharged automatically.
-
Pricing/availability If you're interested, you won't have to wait long to get your hands on the LG Nexus 4 -- it'll be available contract-free from Google Play as of Nov. 13. However, the price won't be small, with the 8GB model going for $299 and the 16GB model selling for $349. You can get a $199, 16GB Nexus 4 with a two-year contract on T-Mobile, though there's no precise availability date for that as yet.
