  • The cloud, brought to you by flash storage

Cloud computing and flash-based storage, two of the fastest-growing technologies in IT, may drive each other forward as Internet-based service providers demand faster access to large amounts of data.

  • Corsair launches Extreme SSD line

Corsair Memory Inc. today unveiled its Extreme Series 2.5-inch solid-state disk (SSD) drives, which it said rival other consumer SSDs in terms of performance.

  • Samsung releases SSDs in PCIe card form factor

Samsung Corp. today released a new solid state disk (SSD) drive aimed at netbook makers that is about 80% smaller than typical 2.5-inch laptop drives, a move that should enable even thinner, higher-performing machines.

  • Western Digital launches line of embedded SSDs

Western Digital Corp. today announced that it has begun shipping its first solid-state line of disk drives based on technology it acquired in March when it bought SiliconSystems Inc. The drives are targeted at embedded systems for business use, not the consumer market.

  • IBM SSDs spread across product lines

IBM on Thursday continued its push into SSDs (solid-state drives), announcing flash drives for server and storage platforms as well as new software for allocating data among different types of drives.

  • Apacer launches new 'tough' hard drives

Apacer today launched its new Serial ATA Flash Drive (SAFD) 254 for industrial and embedded applications. According to a press release, the new product provides Apacer customers with the only industrial SSD solution in today's market that supports both high capacity requirement and wide operating temperature demand. With its NAND SLC memory, the SAFD 254 is capable of read/write speeds of up to 150/130 MB/sec. Apacer's SAFD 254 utilizes the global wear leveling technology, which manages the uneven "wear" on the sectors of a flash media memory by distributing the writes through whole sectors of the flash media to extend its life cycle.

  • Sun adds SSD to its x64 servers, blade systems

Sun's systems design approach to SSD integration across software, systems and storage will give users up to 70 percent faster response times and up to 98 percent less power consumption than traditional spinning hard disk drives, the company said.

  • Seagate drops SSD patent lawsuit against STEC

Seagate Technology Thursday said it has dropped its lawsuit and all claims alleging STEC misappropriated its hard disk drive (HDD) technology as it related to the development of solid state disk (SSD) drives.
