BlackBerry protects users with misplaced, lost or stolen smartphones

Research In Motion (RIM), has launched BlackBerry Protect for A/NZ consumers.

This new, free security solution allows BlackBerry users to wirelessly backup, restore and trace their devices.

Upon installing the application, users can curtail information loss by opting to backup contacts, tasks, calendar, text messages, memos and browser bookmarks stored on their devices automatically on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

If a BlackBerry device is lost, users are able to log on to the BlackBerry Protect website to immediately lock the smartphone and only enable a display message on the home screen for the finder.

The owner of the device can also trace it using a map and force it to ring at full volume if it is believed to be in close proximity.

In the event that a stolen or lost device is unable to be retrieved, the user can assure confidentiality of personal details by erasing all information stored on the smartphone and microSD card through the BlackBerry Protect website.

BlackBerry Protect has the following features: remote device wipe, remote device lock, remote activation of a “Lost and Found” home screen, locate device on a map, remote activation of BlackBerry’s smartphone loud ringer and wireless device backup and restore.

The application is available as a beta download from BlackBerry App World, works on selected BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher and requires a consumer data plan.
