    One in two US mobile subscribers now has a smartphone, fueling the American appetite for apps, according to a Nielsen study. In the past year, the average number of apps on a smartphone has increased from 32 to 41, a 28 percent jump, according to the research.

  • New iPad: 4G no more (sort of)

    Apple has stopped calling the new iPad "4G-capable" after regulators cracked down on its US-only capability to connect to high-speed LTE networks. Although it is still listed as being "4G LTE capable," the new iPad is now called "Wi-Fi + Cellular" instead of "Wi-Fi + 4G" in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and several parts of Asia.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III: Battle of the big displays

    Samsung one-upped itself and gave the Galaxy S III one of the biggest displays available for smartphones. It's the latest example of a trend by iPhone competitors to push larger screen sizes to differentiate themselves. The first Galaxy S phone had a 4-inch screen, and Samsung moved up to 4.3-inch on the SII. The S III, with its 4.8-inch screen, or the HTC One X's 4.7 inches, dwarf the iPhone, which has had a a 3.5-inch since 2007.

  • Samsung Series 9 Ultrabooks to get Ivy Bridge update

    The thin and light Samsung Series 9 Ultrabooks will be upgraded to Intel’s Ivy Bridge. The upcoming 15-inch laptop will sport a Core i5 3317U processor clocked at 1.7Ghz, according to a listing on Samsung’s site, but the company didn’t say when it would be available to buy, or for how much.

    Thought Google+ was getting stale? Think again. Google announced a complete redesign for its social network, which now boasts more than 170 million users. The new interface improves on the photo and video experiences and there's also a new hangouts page among other changes. The new Google+ look has not rolled out to everyone just yet, but it should be in the next few days.

    Toshiba has introduced its new line of quad-core Android tablets, including a giant 13-inch model with a high-resolution display and quad-core processor. The company is also phasing out its 7- and 10-inch Thrive tablets, which will be replaced with the new Excite line of tablets running Android 4.0.
