Compaq initiative to push Prosignias, reports say

Compaq is expected to announce an initiative aimed at making it less expensive for resellers to offer its Prosignia PCs, which are targeted at small and medium-sized businesses, according to reports published last week.

Compaq also plans to introduce a new product for small businesses that requires virtually no set-up and offers e-mail and other features, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The company had previously announced plans to hold a press event in New York on Tuesday 30th of March at which Eckard Pfeiffer, Compaq's chief executive officer, was scheduled to speak. However Compaq said it will bring the event forward to Monday, and has scaled the event down from a press conference to a teleconference for press and analysts, said spokeswoman Nora Hahn.

Hahn wouldn't comment on the subject of the announcement, and claimed it was moved forward because of the interest it has garnered. Several news sources today have been speculating as to what Compaq planned to announce.

Compaq this week will also announce plans to offer microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices in some of its Prosignia notebooks, one industry source told IDG. If so, the development would mark an important step for the Intel rival, whose chips so far have been used mainly in consumer products.
