3Com beat Wall Street's expectations by posting first-quarter net income of $US86.7 million, or 24 cents per share.
Analysts polled by First Call had estimated that 3Com would report earnings per share of 20 cents for the quarter ended August 28.
For the first quarter last year, 3Com posted a loss of $51.2 million, or 15 cents a share.
First-quarter sales totalled $1.4 billion, down from $1.5 billion reported in the same period a year ago.
