3Com cuts modem prices to boost market aspirations

Continuing its bid to secure a 30 per cent share of the Australia modem market, 3Com yesterday revealed it would slash a further 10 per cent off the price of its entire modem product range.

The new pricing structure will see the 3Com US Robotics 56K V.90 external Voice Faxmodem priced at $249 (inc tax) compared to $259 (inc tax). Alternatively, the 3Com US Robotics 56K V.90 external Faxmodem will now cost $209 (inc tax) instead of $229 (inc tax).

Since June this year, when 3Com made its bold bid for modem domination, the vendor claims it has already secured a 10 per cent market share on the basis of a 100 per cent increase in shipments.

Confirming the new price cuts and 3Com's aggressive approach to the modem market, the vendor's executive managing director, Gerhard Rumpff, claimed that global manufacturing volumes, different margin structures and improved distribution channels meant 3Com "can offer more attractive prices than our competitors.

"The first thing we did when we set out aggressive goals for the local modem market was to conduct an in-depth analysis of the distribution model to ensure it mirrored the anticipated demand.

"As a result, we are fully equipped to address all of the local demand through our regionally located support and distribution centres, which in turn, are serviced by our manufacturing facilities in Singapore," Rumpff added.
