Asia-Pacific chip sales offset global decline Semiconductor sales in Asia-Pacific markets rose 4.1 per cent in April compared to the previous month, helping to offset falling revenues in the Americas, Japan and Europe, the Semiconductor Industry Association said last week. Sales from all world markets in April totalled $US10.4 billion, down 6.8 per cent from the $11.4 billion reported a year ago, and down 0.5 per cent from March 1998 sales.

This is the second consecutive month in which Asia-Pacific semiconductor sales have increased, and the SIA embraced the news as a sign of recovery for the region, which has been rocked by financial troubles in recent months.

The semiconductor industry as a whole has been in a slump lately thanks to an oversupply of chips in the market and downward pricing pressure from PC vendors. Data for the SIA's global sales report was collected by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, an organisation that represents 70 semiconductor companies worldwide.
