Computer Associates acquires Tiny Software

Computer Associates has acquired Tiny Software, a maker of Windows-based desktop and server firewall products, for an undisclosed sum.

CA vice-president of eTrust Security Management, Sam Curry, said it acquired Tiny primarily for its firewall software development kit to fill a gap in its own product line.

Tiny firewall technology is expected to be added to desktop products that also combine CA antivirus and anti-spyware software (acquired last year from PestPatrol).

CA will also continue to support and market the Tiny Software line of Tiny Personal and Tiny Server firewalls directly to consumers and business. There are an estimated 2 million customers at present.

"This firewall, elegantly designed, has been popular with high-tech users," Curry said.

Tiny Software maintained technical development in both the US and the Czech city of Prague, he said.

"We've had our own eTrust firewall from years ago, but frankly this is better," Curry said.

Earlier this year, Tiny Software announced its 2005 product line of firewalls, detailing varying types of spyware-related protection, such as preventing code injection. More recently, it released Tiny Firewall 64, a firewall for 64-bit Windows operating systems.
