Tivoli grows Asia business
Tivoli Systems is expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region this year as a result of "spectacular growth" in Australia and Korea.
Plans include further development of a multimillion-dollar briefing centre in Perth to replicate and test in an S/390 mainframe environment.
Tivoli Systems Asia-Pacific general manager Mark Latchford said that business growth across the region last year was 44 per cent, but in Australia the figure was closer to 65 per cent.
Latchford said the Australian market place understands the value proposition of management around e-business initiatives, particularly when it comes to the fundamentals like security and storage.
He said growth in security throughout the region amounted to 200 per cent and was followed closely by storage.
10G Ethernet gathers momentum
This year, the light meets the fibre in terms of getting 10G Ethernet products tested for pre-standards compliance, say some engineers behind the technology.
Almost a year after its inception, the 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (10GEA) expects to see the fruits of its labour with vendors shipping 10G Ethernet modules and switches to service provider and enterprise customers by year-end. The result could lead to ultra-high-speed, Ethernet-based WAN services from service providers and highly scalable, multi-gigabit LAN backbones, despite the fact that a 10G Ethernet standard is a year away from ratification.
IEEE task force, which does the reviewing and approval of 10G Ethernet standards, expects to have the standard approved by March 2002.

Lucent's IP network play, called a "service intelligence" push and built around Lucent's acquisition last year of SpringTide Networks, is geared at newer carriers scrambling to appeal to enterprise customers.
At the centre of the IP service intelligence plan is the SpringTide 7000 IP Service Switch, which packs functionality such as follow-me networking services that are designed to enable service providers to offer capabilities such as IP VPNs to larger customers.
