SMS scores $2.5m water project with Bureau of Meteorology

The 12-month deal builds on the systems integrator's decade-long relationship with the bureau

ASX-listed systems integrator, SMS Management and Technology (ASX:SMX)has nabbed an exclusive deal with the Bureau of Meteorology for the Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS) project.

The 12-month agreement, with an option for a two-year extension, will see SMS implement an information collection and analysis system to compile water data. This will create a single national repository for water information from more than 240 organisations.

Stage one of the contract is worth $2.5 million. The deal stemmed from an existing relationship with the bureau.

“We have done ongoing work with the Bureau of Meteorology, our longstanding client, for more than a decade,” SMS media relations representative, Matthew Kaufman, said.

A team of up to 15 consultants has been assigned to the project. Kaufman anticipated a three-phase rollout and expected the contract value to increase accordingly.

While he conceded that the contract was not monetarily significant to SMS, Kaufman highlighted its importance for the water industry of Australia.

In a press statement, Minister for Climate Change and Water, Penny Wong, said the system will provide publicly accessible water information which can aid organisations and individuals to make better decisions regarding water use.
