Open-source, proprietary vendors partner on cloud BI

Jaspersoft, Talend, Vertica and RightScale link arms for the new offering

Four open-source and proprietary vendors on Wednesday announced a new partnership resulting in a cloud-based BI (business intelligence) stack.

Jaspersoft and Talend will respectively lend their open-source BI and data-integration technologies to the integrated offering, which also employs Vertica's analytic database and RightScale's management software for cloud-based application deployments.

The four vendors are bringing the stack to market collectively, but customers will have to form contractual agreements with each one, according to Yves de Montcheuil, vice president of marketing for Talend.

Each vendor will also be responsible for supporting their own technology, he added. However, the group has created processes meant to make the overall sales process go smoothly, according to de Montcheuil.

In addition, customers will be able to use the pay-as-you-go pricing model that is commonplace in cloud computing.

There is a likely audience for the offering, said analyst Curt Monash of Monash Research.

"This... would make the most sense for a smaller enterprise or department that doesn't yet have full-fledged BI, but rather has been relying on spreadsheets and/or the canned reports built into an operational application," he said via e-mail.

In addition, it may also prove attractive to smaller resellers or consultants who would add their domain expertise and target the same type of customers, he added.

The vendors are also portraying the stack as an option for customers who are looking to run periodic BI projects, or want to use cloud services to deploy experimental analytic "sandboxes."
