VMware wants engineers to have more flings

New Labs site is meeting place for virtualisation techies

Having a fling has suddenly taken on a new meaning: VMware is positively encouraging its engineers to have as many as possible

The company has launched an interactive site aimed at encouring virtualisation engineers to share their tips and expertise. The tools, which VMware has dubbed 'flings' are offered under open source licences.

VMware Labs, hosted on VMware's own website already offers a number of features, including ones for for automating virtualisation tasks, getting ESX performance graphs, but the company is encouraging virtualisation experts to provide more.

In the explanation on its website, VMware explains the reason behind the nomenclature 'flings' "A fling is a short-term thing, not a serious relationship but a fun one. Likewise, the applications offered here are intended to be played with and explored. They are not yet part of any product offering and there is no support for them"

As part of this ease of use policy, no user downloading them has to fill in a form, said VMware. Although users of the site are encouraged to contact VMware, there is, as yet, no forum for virtualisation engineers to share messages,
