Sophos staff stuck in Berlin

Company conference has left 600 Sophos staff, including 20 Australian employees, stranded in Germany due to the volcanic crisis

A bunch of 20 Sophos Australian staff have been stranded in Berlin, Germany since last Friday due to the volcanic crisis that hit Iceland.

All up 600 Sophos employees are stuck in Germany, but the security vendor has hired a Boeing 737 to help get Australian, American and other Asia-Pacific staff safely back. Employees were taken to the country for a company conference.

Several other employees managed to get back to the UK in either a coach, ferry or train, but many are still stuck there.

Senior technology consultant, Graham Cluley has posted a blog about the experience . In it, he said even though staff were stuck it hadn’t stopped them from working.

For example, the stranded American sales force set-up a temporary base at its offices in Oberursel, Germany so that they could continue to work even though they were far from their normal desks.

“But, hey, never let it be said that Sophos isn't at least imaginative in a crisis,” Cluley said. “Of course, a gremlin might still get in the works – and we can't be 100 per cent confident that the Sophos plane is going to get our guys and gals home until it's in the air.”

The assigned plane is scheduled to arrive at approximately 11:00 Central European Time (CET) on Wednesday, 14 hours before Sophos' airlift out of Vienna.

Earlier reports on the volcanic crisis have revealed airlines are slowly beginning to resume services to parts of Europe. The cost of the grounded aircrafts throughout Europe for the airline industry is not yet known.
