iPhone 4G hype exploited by spammers

Scammers use iPhone con to nab personal information

People who have received emails about opportunities to test the ‘iPhone 4G’ are being conned into disclosing their personal information, according an IT security vendor.

The next generation iPhone has been dubbed ‘iPhone 4G’ and its maker, Apple, has been keeping details of the new device under wraps.

Sophos has issued a warning that spammers are sending out emails which offer recipients a chance to test and keep the much anticipated successor to Apple’s iPhone 3G. A link in the email takes users to a website requesting input of personal data.

The vendor has also found a similar scam on social networking site, Twitter, which uses sexy girl images accompanying offers to test and keep the impending iPhone.

Sophos senior technology consultant, Graham Cluley, warns the public to take a “too-good-to-be-true” approach when confronted with these offers.

“Sometimes people’s common sense goes out the window when they’re faced with the possibility of a sexy new gadget and that’s bad news for personal security and privacy,” he said.
