Samsung notches 1 millionth TV app download

In less than a year, Samsung has seen 1 million downloads of TV apps used for online content and services

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest TV maker, announced the one millionth download of apps aimed at high definition TVs on Thursday.

The company set up the Samsung Apps website earlier this year to offer people apps aimed at TVs for popular online content and services including Facebook and Twitter. The company hit a million downloads in less than a year after the initial launch of the site, it said in a statement.

Apps for a number of consumer electronics are bringing popular websites into a growing range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to HD-TVs. Samsung said the most frequently downloaded TV apps worldwide include Hulu Plus, ESPN Next Level and Texas Holdem.

"Samsung is committed to exceeding consumer demand for a better TV viewing experience by providing high-quality Smart TVs equipped with a broad range of interactive content," the company said.

Samsung Apps can be downloaded to around half of products in its 2010 TV line-up.

Samsung announced the apps website at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last January. Since then, it has hosted several "Free the TV Developer Days" around the world to promote software development for HD-TVs. The company promised new announcements for TVs at next year's CES in January 2011.
