The Asia-Pacific server market displayed robust growth in the first quarter of 2011, with shipments rising 21 per cent compared to the same quarter last year, according to Gartner.
Server revenue increased 29 percent year-on-year.
The Australian market managed to grow modestly, with server revenue up 10 per cent this quarter, although shipments fell 5 per cent compared to the same period last year.
“Enterprise spending on server consolidation using virtualisation technology continued to be a key driving factor for server market growth in this region,” Gartner principal research analyst, Erica Gadjuli, said.
x86-based server sales grew 21 percent in shipments and 31 per cent in revenue.
IT investments in key verticals such as financial services and the public sector, driven by positive business sentiment, led to year-on-year revenue growth in mainframe and RISC/Itanium Unix servers, which grew 137 per cent and 15.3 per cent respectively, during the first quarter.
Blade servers, including x86 and non-x86 based, outstripped the rest of the market growing 38 per cent by shipments and 68 per cent in revenue year-on-year – compared to other server form factors, such as rack mountable, rack optimised and tower/standalone.
HP led the server market by shipments with 30 per cent share overall in Asia-Pacific while IBM held the leadership position in revenue, accounting for 41 per cent of the total market.
In terms of shipments, Dell held second spot maintaining 21.8 per cent; IBM was third with 20 per cent marketshare; Lenovo was in fourth place with 5.1 per cent and Huawei rounded out the top five with 3.7 per cent.
All top five vendors in this region had their share of success during the quarter with both shipment and revenue experiencing double digit growth year-on-year, the analyst said.
