Communications vendor, Huawei, has unveiled the MediaPad, a 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb dual-core tablet with pricing and release date in Australia yet to be confirmed.

It is being touted by the vendor as the world’s first 7-inch tablet running on Honeyccomb.

Huawei has previously flagged ambitions to become a household name in the consumer market in the next five years.

In 2010, the vendor entered the market with a range of Huawei-branded mobile phones.

The company is currently in talks with all Australian telco operators for the MediaPad.

Local release date and pricing has yet to be determined.

MediaPad houses a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 1080p high-definition (HD) video playback support and a HDMI port. It carries a 5-megapixel HD camera at the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera at the front.

According to Huawei, MediaPad is great for media and entertainment applications including video gaming.

The tablet has HSPA+ 14.4Mbps and WiFi 802.11n Internet connectivity with support for Huawei’s Device cloud offering and Google’s Android Market. Flash 10.3 is pre-installed.

“The 7-inch tablet remains the preferred size for portability and Android Honeycomb 3.2 is dedicated to enhance the full potential of 7-inch tablets," Huawei chief marketing officer for devices, Victor Xu, said in a statement.

"...The MediaPad opens up new worlds of entertainment for consumers by removing the barriers to tablet ownership, enabling access to a truly high-quality mobile entertainment experience fully integrated with cloud-based internet content.”

MediaPad is 1.05cm thick and weighs 0.39kg.
