The Nokia Lumia 900: How to get it for free in the US

Microsoft and Nokia hope the well-equipped Lumia 900 will finally get U.S. smartphone customers to take a serious look at Windows Phone

The Nokia Lumia 900, the sleek and slim high-end smartphone, can be had for free - even more impressive than the already low $US100 retail price.

AT&T is currently offering a $US100 discount to new customers who order online. So now is the time to snap up one of the trendy handsets if you are planning to buy one.

Microsoft and Nokia hope the well-equipped Lumia 900 will finally get US smartphone customers to take a serious look at Windows Phone, an impressive mobile operating system that hasn't had much luck gaining market share.

Pricing the Lumia 900 at $100 is a good start. Giving it away for free is even better. One thing to remember: New AT&T customers will still be subject to a $36 activation fee.

AT&T's official launch date for the Nokia Lumia 900 is April 8, which is Easter Sunday. Even at $100, the Windows Phone is half the price of comparably equipped mobile phones.

Microsoft's Windows Phone Blog reported the AT&T deal on Friday. Here's how to get a free Lumia 900:

  • Go to: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/deals/100savings.jsp
  • Select: "New to AT&T"
  • Under "Nokia Lumia 900," select "Learn More"
  • On the Lumia 900 page, select "Pre-order"
  • Choose a plan, data service, and any optional accessories you want.
  • The promotional discount is applied automatically to your order.

The Lumia 900 features a 4.3-inch AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, a single-core 1.4 GHz processor, 16 GB of storage, a 1-megapixel front-facing camera, and 512 MB of RAM.
