New SevOne appliance ratchets up the density

SevOne released a bigger and better version of its flagship Performance Appliance Solution on Tuesday, claiming major gains in the areas of efficiency and scalability.

MORE NETWORK MANAGEMENT: Ipanema will offer WAN optimization as a small business service

AND MORE NEW STUFF: Products of the week

The PAS-200k, the company said, is a rack-mount appliance that can monitor and manage 200,000 network elements simultaneously.

SevOne claims that the PAS-200k supports more than four times the total number of network elements than any other single appliance on the market, and that the device allows for a dramatic reduction in the amount of data center space and power consumption required to manage a given network.

According to the company, the unit is able to gather a wide range of vital statistics on network performance and connectivity in real-time without creating problems of its own thanks to a specialized polling engine. It stores historical performance data for a minimum of a year, allowing for valuable analysis.

All that performance crammed into a 2U unit comes at a price, of course - the PAS 200k will set you back a cool $1 million, if you're using it to manage the full 200,000 elements. While this obviously creates a barrier to entry for smaller companies, large enterprises might actually find it a bargain, given the greater efficiency advertised by SevOne.
