Datacentre solutions provider, Digital Realty Trust, has inaugurated its first Sydney datacentre, named Digital Erskine Park.

According to Digital Realty Asia-Pacific senior vice-president and regional head, Kris Kumar, the datacentre is a key part of the company’s Australian growth strategy.

The growing demand for the Cloud and applications is what led to the creation of the datacentre facility, he said.

“This new facility, along with our recent Macquarie Park acquisition, gives us a strong footprint in the Sydney market. We believe it will create jobs and attract global enterprises to the state of NSW.”

The company estimates about 250 jobs were created by the investment within the Western Sydney region.

NSW premier, Barry O’Farrell, who also officiated at the ceremony, claimed NSW is home to 40 per cent of all ICT businesses and the addition of Digital Realty is a “significant boost to the economy”.

“It is a clear vote of confidence in the economy of Western Sydney. It is also an opportunity to stop some of the flow overseas,” O’Farrell said.

Fully commissioned in 2012, the 8020sqm facility comprises four 1440kW Turn Key Flex Pods.

Kumar said a good, stable flow of power and access to fiber and connectivity were the primary reasons for picking Erskine Park to host its datacentre facility.

He added that Digital Realty is looking to further expand its datacentre sites in Sydney and in other regions of Australia.
