Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 3 phablet will supposedly feature a flexible OLED screen.
The Galaxy Note 3 is expected to launch later this and a number of details about the smartphone-cum-tablet have leaked. However, now the device is rumoured to use a flexible OLED display made from plastic, according to the OLED Association.
The site said: "Samsung Electronics Company (SEC) will exhibit a new Galaxy Note 3, featuring an unbreakable OLED display at IFA 2013 in September and plans to launch the product in Q4'2013."
If this information is correct, the Galaxy Note 3 could be the first smartphone to hit the market with a bendy screen. It's long been known that Samsung is working on technology. It showed off its Yuom display at CES.
However, Samsung has competition in the form of local rival LG which has announced it plans to release a smartphone with a flexible screen by the end of the year.
"Based on our research, SDC will utilize a plastic substrate with an LTPS active matrix and RGB patterned OLED." added the OLED Association.
As well as being bendy, the Galaxy Note 3's screen will also be unbreakable. Size and resolution is unknown but previous rumours suggest 5.9in or 6.3in of real estate. The OLED Association doesn't expect the screen will reach Full HD so it's more likely to be 720p.
Since the display is made from plastic rather than glass, it can be thinner and lighter than displays currently being used in handsets. This could mean a thinner design or more room for a larger battery.
