Flash memory storage maker, SanDisk, has announced an expansion to its solid state drive portfolio with the addition of the SanDisk Extreme II SSD, for technology enthusiasts, and gamers.

The SanDisk Extreme II SSD is built with the company’s 19 nanometre manufacturing process technology that relies on the company’s flash memory architecture.

SanDisk, country manager A/NZ, George Saad, said the new SSD will be a hit with consumers, especially gaming and PC enthusiasts, as well as resellers looking to provide upgrades to their customers.

The SanDisk Extreme II is faster than the original SanDisk Extreme SSD, delivering up to 550 MB/sec sequential read and 510 MB/sec sequential write speeds, and up to 95,000 random read IOPS and 78,000 random IOPS.

The new SSD is available in 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB at $199, $349, and $599 MSRP respectively.

SanDisk also announced the launch of several other products aimed at primarily the consumer segment: SanDisk Extreme microSDHC and microSDXC UHS-I memory cards, aimed at users looking for expanded memory for smartphones, tablets, and cameras; SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 flash drive, which claims to help users share files with speeds up to 80MB/sec.

SanDisk’s Extreme II range is being taken up mostly by the resellers who want to help their business customers upgrade with lower-cost alternatives, said Saad.

The retailers, on the other hand, tend to focus less on the upgrade market, but more on the new product market, Saad noted.

SanDisk spent about $US 600 million in R&D last year, noted Saad. The company, with its extensive engineering base, is focused on building products that help increase storage on a small space.
