Food scanning app wins national Consumer iAward

GS1 and AFGC recognised for GoScan app

GS1 Australia and the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) have been named winners of the national Consumer iAward for the GS1 GoScan smartphone and tablet application at the 2013 iAwards Services Domain Category for ICT Innovation.

GS1 Australia is the local provider of GS1 EPCglobal standards, and offers barcodes, electronic business messaging, and global data synchronisation network (GDSN).

GS1’s GoScan app is designed to give consumers accurate information on food products by offering a range of product information from brand owners, including: ingredient list; allergen declarations and other consumer information; nutritional information and RDI; dietary information such as vegetarian, vegan, Kosher, Halal, organic and more; country of origin statement.

The iAwards – created to showcase exceptional ICT products and services and therefore provide impetus to launch further successes – criteria for the 2013 Consumer iAward in the Services Domain category was based on innovative initiatives which allow companies to move quickly from a product to consumer focus by providing technology to deliver in line with customer requirements.

“Winning the Victorian iAwards Merit Recipient award in June this year was a huge recognition of the collaborative work done between industry, health professionals, and GS1,” GS1 Australia CEO, Maria Palazzolo, said.

“Being awarded the national Consumer iAward demonstrates how key industry groups like GS1 Australia and the AFGC can lead the innovation and application of new technologies into traditional industries such as food and beverage.

GS1 GoScan was launched for free download in March this year. It is currently only available for Apple iOS users via the App Store. The company said an Android release is scheduled for August 28, at which point it will appear on the Google Play Store and in Samsung Apps.
