Gartner adds Dell to leaders quadrant for UTM

Recognised for SMB-oriented SonicWall products

Analyst firm, Gartner, has positioned technology giant, Dell, in the leaders quadrant of the 2013 Magic Quadrant for United Threat Management (UTM).

Gartner defines the UTM market as “multifunction network security products used by SMBs,” and classifies mid-size businesses as having 100 to 1000 employees with revenue ranging from $50 million to $1 billion.

The Magic Quadrant for UTM therefore includes vendors which “are at the forefront of making and selling UTM products build for mid-size business requirements.”

These companies also lead the market in offering new safeguarding features, and in permitting customers to deploy them inexpensively without significantly affecting the end-user experience or increasing staffing burdens.

Dell makes two UTM product lines for the SMB space: SonicWall TZ for the smallest businesses, and SonicWall NSA series for SMBs.

Having qualified for the leaders quadrant, the products demonstrated: standard network stateful firewall functions; remote access and site-to-site virtual private network (VPN) support; secure web gateway functionality; network intrusion prevention focused on workstation protection.

“The Dell SonicWALL unified threat management product line is a cost-effective solution with very good overall performance and low total cost of ownership, making these offerings particularly attractive to the mid-market,” Dell product management executive director, Patrick Sweeney, said.

In addition, the Dell SonicWALL products are part Dell’s Connected Security solutions for network security, “ensuring that customers won’t have to sacrifice performance for security.” From the device to the data center, to the Cloud, Dell helps mitigate risks to enable the business.

For 2012, Gartner estimates that worldwide revenue in the UTM market “totaled approximately $1.53 billion,” representing 18.7 per cent growth over its estimate for 2011.
