Real-time network visibility gaining importance: Micron21

Local datacentre sees a growing need to see what is happening on networks

Attacks from both inside and outside the network calls for real-time network visualisation, according to Micron21.

Managing director, James Braunegg, said real-time visibility into the network is gaining priority for local businesses.

“We need to know at any time what is occurring in the network, as waiting for 30 seconds for a report is not real-time enough,” he said.

In addition to being able to tell what is occurring, Braunegg said real-time visibility also answers when it is taking place.

“When a network is under attack, we need to understand the flow of traffic through the network,” he said.

Visualising the network

The sooner an anomaly on the network is detected, Braunegg said a human response can be used to resolve it.

“When you talk about DDoS [distributed denial-of-service] attacks, that is a sudden increase of packets per second,” he said.

“It becomes how quickly you can be made aware of an issue to resolve and mitigate it.”

Micron21 began working with ManageEngine in order to access a real-time graphical representation of the network and to be alerted in real-time of any anomalies.

A development Braunegg is keeping an eye on is flow technology, or software that can understand and display what is occurring.

“It’s mission critical in supporting networks moving forward, as you need to know where that packet came from and protocol information to know where it is going,” he said.

Micron21 initially started off as a reseller, though the company now runs a datacentre based in outer east of Melbourne.
