Revel takes iPad POS platform open source

Revel Systems has made its e-commerce platform available to all via its open-source code

iPad point-of-sale e-commerce firm, Revel Systems, has made its platform available via its open-source code.

Now retailers who wish to integrate Revel's powerful platform can customise it to their own business needs.

This furthers Revel's efforts to make its iPad POS fully customisable and give more businesses access to its tools.

Some of the features in the e-commerce platform include: shipping to customer, matrix inventory which allows users to pick up to two attributes of a product, open-ended design that optimises product visibility.

Other features include images that change when a product's colour is selected, barcoding for each attribute or product, payments like PayPal and ability to track serial numbers in system purchases.

The open-source E-commerce Platform enables retailers to integrate the platform into their business.

The company has made its source code available for businesses to use and customise as they see fit.

An open API - or application programming interface - enables users to make minor changes to source code in order to customise the original platform to their individual needs.

Now businesses can harness Revel's code and make changes to the platform according to branding and individual business needs.

Revel Systems chief executive and co-founder, Lisa Falzone, said the ability to sell products online was crucial to any retail store's bottom line.

"However, that ability - a store's E-commerce Platform - must work seamlessly and communicate with a store's infrastructure, which includes the point of sale and inventory systems," he said.

"At Revel, we've built a powerful E-commerce platform that enables retailers to broaden their reach and sell more items, all while maintaining cohesion between in-store and online.

"By making our platform open-source, retailers can simply take our code and build their own E-commerce system the way they want it while still benefiting from our powerful technology. We are giving enterprise-level tools to small business owners so they can compete in today's economy."
