Federal Government agency, CrimTrac, is putting the call out to market for a new biometric identification system that can recognise fingerprints, palm, footprints and facial images.
The new biometric system will replace the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) in 2017.
The NAFIS is the only national capability that provides police agencies with access to fingerprint data.
In a statement, CrimTrac said it was seeking submissions for a system that gives law enforcement agencies fast and reliable technology so state and federal police can ultimately undertake facial recognition of images held in police databases, which includes approximately 12 million images nationally.
The new system will also have to integrate with existing law enforcement systems and continue to evolve as the agency’s biometric capability expands.
