Trend Micro finalises TippingPoint acquisition

Former HP networking asset integrates into solution offering

Trend Micro has finalised an agreement to acquire intrusion prevention systems (IPS) company and HP asset, TippingPoint.

Trend Micro chief executive, Eva Chen, said the deal put the vendor in a unique position to deliver integrated, layered capabilities to address the complex network security challenges facing global companies.

The TippingPoint portfolio includes threat intelligence from Digital Vaccine Labs (DVLabs) and the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), a bounty program that encourages and rewards independent security researchers to identify previously unknown vulnerabilities.

Terms of the $US300 million agreement to acquire TippingPoint were initially disclosed in October 2015. The transaction includes industry expertise, security technology and intellectual property, in addition to an enterprise customer base of over 3500.

Trend Micro and ZDI are also the co-sponsors of Pwn2Own, a competition that gathers security researchers to identify vulnerabilities in four of the most targeted software platforms. This year’s event will take place at CanSecWest 2016, March 16-17 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
