Strut Digital will be the first partner in Australia to implement the Amazon Web Services (AWS) petabyte-scale data transport solution, Snowball.

AWS head of architecture APAC, Glenn Gore, confirmed at the AWS Summit Sydney 2016, that Australian digital media agency, Baauer Media will be the first local customer to get its hands on a Snowball.

Gore said the company expects to shift 60 terabytes of data next week with its local partner, Strut Digital, that has had a long-standing history of AWS environment managed services engagement with Bauer Media.

Strut Digital chief executive, Zack Levy, said he had been eagerly awaiting the Snowball since its announcement at the AWS Reinvent Conference 2015 in the US and described the solution as a ‘no-brainer’ with the Bauer Media use case.

Levy said the digital agency in its most active days, can generate up to 3 terabytes of data within 2 or 3 days.

“In the past they invested in expensive SAN infrastructure for archiving but at some point businesses will chew through all their spare capacity and they have to make a decision whether to buy more hardware or just rationalise. It’s always a state of limbo and we felt the pain of the decision with them because it is our team that works alongside the business.

“When we decided we needed to tackle this head on and we had to move 60 or 70 terabytes, Snowball literally emulated the old way of plugging in, copying everything across and overnight, the data is in the S3 bucket.

Levy added that as the Internet of Things grows and more data is generated, it will all need to be archived, creating a lot more demand and increased adoption of Cloud, particularly within large enterprise.

“When large enterprise want to adopt AWS, often the business adopts it on their rules only, but AWS listens and adapts to their needs. You can see this trend in the last twelve months and Snowball is an example of just one of them. The solution works equally well whether a business is moving terabytes of data or petabyte. A business could literally order ten of them, plug them in, follow the same process and ship them out.”
