Mingis on Tech: Roller coasters with a twist -- virtual reality!

If sharp turns, deep dips and vertical 360s aren't enough for you, some roller coasters now offer VR for the thrill-seeking masses

Let's get this out of the way right now: I'm not a roller coaster rider.

But Network World's Brandon Butler and Multimedia Editor Keith Shaw are brave. They do 'coasters. They especially do them when virtual reality (VR) is part of the ride.

In case you hadn't noticed, VR (and its cousin, augmented reality) are showing up in unlikely places. Case in point: Six Flags New England, which has teamed up with Samsung to turn its roller coaster ride into a Superman adventure using VR goggles and Samung Galaxy S7 smartphones.

You hop onto the ride as always, strap in and then strap on the goggles. Then thrill! (as you watch Superman catch the out-of-control coaster before it crashes.) Chill! (as Lex Luthor zaps Superman and sends you plummeting toward the ground again.) Check out the video below to see what the ride is like.

So what did tech's dynamic duo think of the experience? And where else might VR soon show up? Butler, Shaw and Computerworld Executive News Editor hash out the thrilling details.
