Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has appointed Tony Whigham as its new government sales director for Australia and New Zealand.

In the Canberra based role, Whigham will be charged with growing the business in strategic federal and state government accounts and developing new areas of collaboration with Hitachi’s social innovation solutions.

“In Australia and New Zealand, government agencies have been quick to realise the benefits of delivering services digitally,” Whigham said. “ But with some of the region’s largest data centres and IT legacy systems, the public sector also faces unique challenges due to the size and complexity of digital transformation projects.

“I’m thrilled to join Hitachi Data Systems to support CIOs on their journey with a data centric strategy and solutions set, and also leverage the synergies with Hitachi, Ltd, one of the largest and most ethical technology companies in the world.”

Whigham joins HDS from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) subsidiary, Aruba Networks, where he was director-Federal Government. Prior to this, Whigham held senior leadership positions at Dimension Data, Teradata, and Optus.

HDS A/NZ VP and general manager, Nathan McGregor, said that government agencies face unique challenges and opportunities around digital transformation, and that Wingham, in his new role, would be well-placed to help them overcome these challenges.

“Tony brings a wealth of relevant experience to the role to guide departments through the digital transition process, with the aim to deliver even better services to citizens,” he said. “He is also passionate about educating the market on the possibilities for enhanced public safety, innovation and collaboration that arise from the internet of things (IoT).”

The appointment is the second senior hire for the company to come from HPE's ranks in recent weeks, after Paul Shaw, former A/NZ general manager of storage, joined the company to be its northern region sales director.

In his new role, Shaw is tasked with focusing on the end-to-end business of the company for the region, growing the business for HDS enterprise IT solutions, and educating the market on Internet of Things (IoT) opportunities.
