Melbourne Health has put out a tender for the provision of a network and site infrastructure upgrade, which will see Cisco products upgraded, repurposed or replaced by newer offerings from the vendor.

The project has the goal of increasing the reliability, security and performance of the Melbourne Health network and site infrastructure, through enabling appropriate levels of user access to a proposed Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to be introduced at Melbourne Health, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Women’s Hospital.

Melbourne Health provides services for The Royal Melbourne Hospital – City Campus, The Royal Melbourne Hospital – Royal Park Campus, North Western Mental Health, North West Dialysis Service and Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, employing 9,000 staff and managing 1,400 beds.

Responses to the tender will be accepted until 28 September with the first phase of the project expected to start in December 2017.

The entire project is structured in three phases, however one is dependent on the success of the previous one and funding approval.

Phase one, which is expected to be completed by December 2018, will consist of network remediation of approximately 55 per cent of the local area network (LAN) at Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus and upgrade of interconnect to allow redundant connectivity between Parkville precinct sites.

Meanwhile, phase two of the project will provide network remediation of the remaining 45 per cent of the LAN at Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus and remediation of the networks at Royal Park Campus and in scope Melbourne Health remote sites - this phase is planned to be completed by December 2019.

The last phase, planned to be completed by June 2020, will extend and improve the wireless network capabilities to support EMR access across all Melbourne Health in scope sites plus the implementation of a redundant uninterruptible power supply at the RMH data centre.

Cisco products included in the request for tender include Nexus 7706, Cisco 3850, Catalyst 4500X layer 3 and others.
