UK-based converged IT services provider GCI has taken its first steps in globally expanding its operations through the acquisition of Microsoft partner Modality Systems.
Modality provides communications and collaboration services to more than 1,000 private and public companies across 100 countries and has operations in the UK, USA, Asia and Australia, giving GCI the opportunity to expand its business footprint and services offering in the market.
“The acquisition of Modality Systems provides GCI and its customers with established scale and support internationally,” GCI CEO Adrian Thirkill said. “Geographically, it expands the ability of the combined companies to service larger, global companies and additionally widens key new markets in the USA, Australia and Asia where Modality has already established sales and delivery capability for enterprise customers.”
Modality has developed a variety of software technologies which enable enhanced features, deeper management capability and improved use of Microsoft intelligent communications software, which complements GCI’s existing UC offerings.
Modality also provides a suite of video conferencing services, with full service video room management, video bridging and web consultation offerings, all integrated into the Microsoft collaboration suite.
The Modality business will be run within the GCI group.

Modality CEO James Rodd said both companies had invested heavily in innovating around Microsoft’s collaboration suite.
“We believe the potential is massive given that Microsoft Teams alone is set to become the second-biggest workplace collaboration app by 2020, surpassing both Slack and Google Hangouts,” Rodd said.
