Oracle has revealed plans to launch a new cloud region in Melbourne by the end of 2020.
The announcement took place at the vendor's Oracle OpenWorld 2019 where it unveiled plans to launch 20 new cloud regions, creating a total 36 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure regions.
The move forms part of the company's in-country dual region strategy aimed at helping customers address disaster recovery and compliance needs.
Oracle said in a statement that with these dual regions, customers can deploy both production and disaster recovery capacity within their country or jurisdiction to meet business continuity and compliance requirements.
"Customers will now have access to all Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services including Oracle Autonomous Database; as well as Oracle Fusion Applications, in these regions."
Currently, Oracle has 16 regions globally including Sydney.
Oracle expects to open an average of one region every 23 days over the next 15 months for a total of 20 additional regions, consisting of 17 commercial and three government.
Oracle also announced the expansion of its regions interconnected with Microsoft Azure, which are currently only available at Ashburn and London. This will be expanded to interconnect to US West, Asia (including Australia) and Europe.
Similar to commercial regions, Oracle Cloud and Microsoft Azure will extend their interoperability into government regions. This will now enable joint Oracle and Microsoft government customers to more easily move applications to the cloud.
