Volante Online exceeds expectations with SMEsThe recent move to the SME market is exceeding expectations for Volante OnLine, the company has announced. Part of business-to-business, technology services and solutions provider Volante, Volante OnLine is a Web-based call centre backed unit, launched last December to service the SME market. A spokesperson said revenues in May alone reached $700,000 and, with more than 1100 businesses registered, the company expects to turn a profit by the first quarter of the new financial year.

Melbourne IT still has naming rights

Domain name registrar Melbourne IT has renewed its Accred- itation Agreement with Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the next five years. This continues the company's right to register .com, .net and .org domains globally through its successful domain name registration business Internet Names WorldWide. The renewal process is stricter than in the past, requiring registrars to ensure compliance through reseller networks.

Web inventor: Let it be free, says Berners-LeeTim Berners-Lee, the Briton who invented the World Wide Web a decade ago, says while the Web should be free to develop unfettered by interference from government, government itself could lead by example with enlightened privacy policies. A founder of the World Wide Web Consortium, Berners-Lee told delegates at the recent GovTech 2000 conference in the US of the importance of developing standard formats for the Web.

Love Bug becomes cash cow for major antivirus vendorsThe "Love Bug" virus that devastated computer systems worldwide earlier this year has proved lucrative for two anti-virus software companies, Symantec and Mcafee. The latest Media Metrix figures show that site traffic for symantec.com and mcafee.com almost doubled during the month of May. Symantec.com reached a total of 157,000 visitors in May (up from 85,000 in April). Mcafee.com totalled more than a quarter of a million visitors in May (263,000 up from 135,000 the month before).
