The server market in the Asia-Pacific region is booming, with the latest IDC figures giving it a market value of $US4.7 billion, a 36 per cent increase from 1998 to 1999.
The report, which excludes Japan, reveals the total amount of units sold reached 380,100, an increase of 44 per cent and while entry servers claimed the most buoyant growth, servers in all size classes expanded.
Unix dominant
By operating platform, Unix continued to dominate, with 47 per cent revenue share. It was the only platform in the high-end segment to experience higher growth figures in 1999 than 1998. High-end user server revenues increased by 96 per cent, while unit shipments doubled.
Windows NT experienced a surge, with revenues up 83 per cent in the 1998-1999 financial year, which resulted in almost a 7 percentage points market share increase to 25.1 per cent. Windows NT was the fastest growing segment in the entry servers market beating Unix by 16 per cent, with a 62.5 per cent increase in unit shipments and 85 per cent increase in revenues. Unix's share within the total entry server market fell by 1.2 per cent, despite a healthy growth in unit sales of 46 per cent.
Meanwhile, OS/390 servers defied market perception that Y2K lockdown would lead to a decline in sales and experienced a moderate growth of 4 per cent.
