The National Broadband Network (NBN) wholesale access services being supplied in Australia by nbn has cracked the two million mark, representing an increase of 365,853 since the last reporting period, according to the latest quarterly report on the network by the nation’s competition watchdog
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released the latest figures, for the period ending 31 March 2017, on 3 May, unveiling the number of HFC services in operation were up, reaching 63,475, from 14,551, as reported in the December quarter of the ACCC NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report.
Based on the quarterly figures for the three months ending 30 September, the top four acquirers of NBN access services in Australia were Telstra, TPG, Optus, and Vocus.
“The NBN rollout to date has largely been in regional areas,” said ACCC Chairman Rod Sims.
“Competitors to Telstra are supplying 46 per cent of services in the regions compared with traditional market shares for broadband services where Telstra often had well over 60 per cent market share,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said.
Unsurprisingly, the latest report shows Telstra remaining on top, hitting 361,078 services in operation (SIO) for FTTP and 21,121 SIO for FTTN. The telco also cracked 4,092 SIO for FTTB and 57,262 SIO for Wireless.
TPG follows Telstra for FTTP and Wireless, recording 222,200 and 17,047 SIO respectively.
However, Optus is ahead of TPG, coming in second place behind Telstra for FTTB and FTTN, reaching 1,774 and 6,070 SIO respectively.
Currently there are 761,557 FTTP SIO and 36,190 FTTN SIO, according to the ACCC’s figures.
The latest quarterly report also showed demand for aggregate network capacity (Connectivity Virtual Circuit) continues to increase with NBN Co contracted to supply 2,149 gigabits per second, up 20 per cent from 1,785 gigabits per second in December 2016.
In terms of the preferred Mbps speed tier, the ACCC said that 55 per cent of all services acquired are at the 25/5 Mbps speed tier.
“The most popular speed tier on the NBN remains 25/5 Mbps,” Sims added.
