Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has signed a five-year agreement with Porsche Informatik to provide hybrid cloud infrastructure on an as-a-service basis, leveraging VMware technologies.

Porsche Informatik operates as the in-house IT service provider of Porsche Holding Salzburg (PHS), with the alliance set to impact approximately 30,000 employees and a global network of automotive dealers.

The car manufacturing giant will deploy HPE GreenLake and HPE Synergy solutions to “manage and scale” data-intensive applications and workloads, amid app development plans.

Central to this will be VMware Cloud Foundation - owned by long-standing rival Dell Technologies - which was first announced to the market in August 2019.

“In today's automotive industry, organisations must be fast and agile to remain competitive,” said Peter Friedwagner, head of infrastructure and common platforms at Porsche Informatik. “The development time for new technologies and time to market are getting shorter, while digitalisation advances continuously.”

According to Friedwagner, PHS requires “operational consistency” as the company embraces new automotive technologies and moves towards e-mobility in the market.

“HPE provides Porsche Informatik the flexibility to consume hybrid cloud computing power as a service, supporting a high degree of automation efficiency combined with state of the art security,” he added.

The GreenLake as-a-service solution is designed to optimise operations through metering and capacity management, while Synergy allows PHS to compose and configure new resources to speed up application provisioning.

Embedded in Synergy, OneView also enables the organisation to “pull together” servers, storage and networking for multiple infrastructure platforms in one management interface.

Since implementing GreenLake and Synergy, the business has "improved application performance, decreased data centre complexity and increased responsiveness".

“The automotive industry is undergoing significant disruption, and the winners will be the companies that can understand trends and design and deliver innovations that create a compelling customer experience,” said Phil Davis, president of hybrid IT at HPE.

“HPE is proud to play a critical role in helping PHS embrace transformation at every level of the business, from how they empower employees and dealerships, to how they serve customers. HPE’s unique as-a-service and composable offerings give PHS a strong platform to steer their business to greater success.”

Through GreenLake, Davis said PHS is leveraging a fully managed hybrid cloud environment, paying on a consumption only basis.
