New VPN launched

e-business service provider eGlobal has announced the availability of Check Point Software's virtual private network (VPN) and Firewall software via the ASP model.

It is the first time the Check Point products, which hold a significant market share in the channel, have been delivered from an Australian data centre. Nasdaq-listed Check Point Software holds a dominating 53 per cent market share of the global VPN and firewall product market, and has been sold via the ASP model in the US, but until now has not been distributed in this manner in Australia. The new eGlobal offering is hosted at eGlobal's Brisbane data centre and rebranded under the eGlobal brand name.

Ben Shipley, sales director for eGlobal, said a customer trial scheme held in recent months proved successful enough to offer a complete managed security service. He said customers are gaining confidence in outsourcing the management of their security via the ASP model.

"There are just as many who want to do it as those who don't," he said. "They know we keep a close eye on how we do it, and it is our methodology that gives them the confidence to know we're doing the right thing by them."

The rollout and implementation of the service is priced at various levels according to the scale of the operation. Smaller implementations, which link small numbers of remote offices or only offer the firewall service, begin at about $50,000 while larger implementations, for companies with hundreds to thousands of users spread nationally, cost up to $500,000. The eGlobal offering involves both an initial implementation fee and a recurring management/hosting fee.

Shipley said eGlobal is partnering various systems integrators and telco providers to round out the offering with any services it does not provide.

Privately held eGlobal is soon to acquire ASX-listed smart card specialists Coms21. The resulting entity will be a listed company under the eGlobal name.
