Telstra has partnered with Magna Systems and Summit Tech to deliver 8K VR streaming over the telco’s 5G network.
Exhibited at the Telstra Vantage showcase in Mebourne, the 5G voice and video live stream showcased a beach on the Gold Coast using a Kandao Obsidan R 8K camera.
The partnership consisted of Telstra supplying the 5G network, while Summit Tech provided the 8k — eight times the resolution of standard high definition screening — VR technology.
Sydney-based engineering consultancy firm Magna Systems meanwhile acted as the systems integrator in the process, while audio-visual specialists Igloo Vision created the experience at Telstra Vantage.
Using an outside broadcast truck, Summit Tech designed a capture and encoding system, which can be set up in any location with 5G coverage, and began transmitting to Melbourne.
The footage could then be watched by viewers equipped with a Summit Tech RCS VR Odience application, a platform for 5G-based live event streaming, which can be accessed via 4G and Wi-Fi networks, as well as 5G.
Telstra made its first steps into developing 5G in the Gold Coast in June last year when it launched its 5G Innovation Centre there, as reported by Computerworld.
The telco then unveiled its first 5G commercial devices in December, with FKG Group becoming the first customer.
In July, Telstra then made its first end-to-end 5G Standalone call with network partner Ericsson from the Gold Coast Innovation Centre.
